A first stab at formalizing the requirements for Quoddy.

High Level Overview

Quoddy is an "Enterprise Social Network". That means that it shares features with consumer social networking sites, like Facebook, Google Plus, LinkedIn, etc., but is tailored for use in an organizational setting. Quoddy is intended to be a tool for supporting and facilitating knowledge transfer, knowledge sharing, innovation and collaboration in the enterprise. Quoddy also fulfills a portion of the Fogbeam "Enterprise Knowledge Network" vision.

Distinction from consumer social networking sites

Quoddy will have a number of facets and aspects in which it differs from consumer facing social networking sites like Facebook and G+. A high level review of those aspects follows.

  • Integration with business applications.
  • Integration with other knowledge sharing tools (esp. other elements of the Fogcutter Suite)
  • Participation in an Enterprise Knowledge Network through use of Semantic Web technologies.
  • Subscriptions - a feature that allows a user to subscribe to receive updates from defined data sources, including: Business events via the ESB/SOA adapter, RSS/Atom feeds, iCal feeds, ActivityStrea.ms feeds, and others)
  • Stream Definitions - a feature that allows a user fine grained control over what items appear in their "feed" (or "wall") area. A user may create multiple stream definitions, and shall be able to quickly and easily toggle the active stream definition.
  • Integration with enterprise SSO / access control mechanisms.

In addition Quoddy will also include features which are commonly found in consumer social networks, where those features are generally useful and/or can be tailored to provide specific benefit in an organizational / enterprise setting.
