Summary

On foldables unfolded and portrait tablets (roughly 768-1023px CSS viewport width - e.g. Galaxy Z Fold unfolded, Surface Duo spanned), the site rendered both the desktop sidebar and the phone-optimized mobile shell (floating search pill, bottom dock, sheets) at once, with no real header row. That's the mismatched-breakpoint bug behind the "lots of whitespace / broken-looking" report at those widths.

Root cause: the sidebar switches to desktop mode at md: (768px, sidebar.tsx), but the header row/nav and every mobile-only chrome component stayed gated at lg: (1024px). In between, you got the worst of both.

Fix

Realign the mismatched breakpoints down to md: so they match where the sidebar already switches:

  • header.tsx: main header row, collection-switcher nav, Extensions pill (3 spots)
  • mobile-shell.tsx: top-bar wrapper, bottom-padding reservation, bottom-dock/sheets wrapper (3 spots)
  • mobile-top-bar.tsx, mobile-bottom-dock.tsx, mobile-recents-row.tsx: their own gating class (1 spot each)

768px+ now gets the already-built desktop layout (slim sidebar + header + up to 5-column icon grid) instead of double chrome. The icon grid itself already scaled fine (3→8 columns across breakpoints) and needed no changes.

Test plan

  • pnpm exec tsc --noEmit - clean
  • pnpm lint on touched files - clean (one pre-existing unrelated warning in mobile-recents-row.tsx, not introduced by this change)
  • pnpm build - static export succeeds
  • Manual check at ~800px width (Chrome DevTools device toolbar, or an actual fold/tablet) - not yet visually confirmed in this session due to a browser-automation tooling issue; please eyeball before merging

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Responsive Design
    • Updated navigation, extensions, collection switching, and mobile layout visibility for medium-sized screens.
    • Mobile top and bottom navigation elements now remain available at medium viewport widths.
    • Mobile recents and shell components transition to desktop layouts at the medium breakpoint instead of the large breakpoint.

RetriggerConfidence Score: 4/5

This PR is not safe to merge until mobile behavior and spacing use the same md boundary as the newly changed visibility classes.

Summary

This PR moves the visible shell boundary from lg to md, showing the desktop header and hiding phone chrome at tablet widths. The visual classes are internally consistent across the five changed files, but the underlying mobile interaction predicate and top-padding reset remain tied to 1024px, leaving invisible mobile behavior active in the target range.

  • Shows the desktop header, collection navigation, and Extensions action from md.
  • Hides the mobile top bar, dock, sheets, and recent row from md.
  • Resets mobile bottom compensation from md, but does not migrate the corresponding JavaScript behavior or top compensation.

Comments Outside Diff

These findings sit on lines the diff does not cover, so they could not be posted inline. Each one leaves this list once its file changes.

  • P1 Hidden mobile behavior remains src/components/mobile/mobile-shell.tsx:178 ▶

At 768–1023px, the desktop shell is visible and these mobile sheets are hidden, but useIsMobileShell() still treats the viewport as mobile. Clicking an icon therefore prevents normal navigation and opens a hidden sheet, which locks body scrolling without showing dismissal controls. The page also retains top padding for the hidden mobile bar until 1024px. Move the JavaScript media query and both body-padding resets to the same md boundary as these visibility classes.

Align the JavaScript breakpoint with the md layout breakpoint.

At widths from 768px through 1023.98px, the md:hidden mobile wrapper is hidden, but useIsMobileShell() remains true. MobileShell still installs document-level handlers for desktop /icon/... links.

A touch or pen long press calls openAction() and suppresses the follow-up click. The default iconOpenMode is "sheet", so a normal click calls openIcon() and prevents navigation. The target link is not inside a dialog, and the hidden wrapper does not prevent document-level interception.

Update useIsMobileShell() to use the width below md.

Proposed fix
-  return useMediaQuery("(max-width: 1023.98px)");
+  return useMediaQuery("(max-width: 767.98px)");

useIsMobileShell() still checked max-width 1023.98px (the old lg
cutoff) after header, top bar, and dock moved their visibility
breakpoint to md (768px) in #1111. Between 768 and 1023px this left
the desktop header visible while mobile-only behavior (icon link
interception, long press, pull to refresh) stayed active and its
portaled bottom sheet could pop up over the desktop layout, reading
as a glitch on resize. Lowered the hook to 767.98px to match.
