I struck out trying to prove this, and noticed things behaving awfully wonky. Got a clue when it told me "this var is implicit - did you mean to use ... {thing in scope}?" (new warning - w00t!).
So I made to that all the methods in the typeclass law definitions are actually referring to the methods, and aren't just auto-implicits. Things were a lot easier after that.
