Vconnect

Vconnect is an open source social media android app available on Google Play Store. It provides special data security features such as no data tracking whatsoever and each data node is stored under an encrypted key. Other features include :

  1. Image Sharing with others on feed
  2. Following other users
  3. Texting/Direct Messaging
  4. Like, Comment and Save posts
  5. Sharing posts in chat
  6. Hide Posts
  7. Creating and Joining Groups
  8. Reward Points on sharing posts and joining groups Vconnect acts as an alternative to other social media apps, it provides the data security that one deserves. User can share posts, chat or join discussions on the groups freely without having the fear of any sort of data tracking. Vconnect is made on Android Studio using Java. The data is stored using Firebase Realtime Database and Firebase Cloud Storage. The Push notifications are implemented by Firebase Cloud Messaging.

Getting Started

Follow these instructions to build and run the project with mock data..

  1. Clone this repository.
  2. Download the appropriate JDK for your system. We are currently on JDK 8.
  3. Install Android Studio.
  4. CD into the project repo and run make bootstrap to bootstrap your Android development environment. Keep an eye on the output to see if any manual steps are required.
  5. Import the project. Open Android Studio, click Open an existing Android Studio project and select the project. Gradle will build the project.
  6. Create a Firebase Project and link that to your Android Studio Project.
  7. Run the app. Click Run > Run 'app'. After the project builds you'll be prompted to build or launch an emulator.

Contributing

We intend for this project to be an educational resource: we are excited to share our wins, mistakes, and methodology of Android development as we work in the open. Our primary focus is to continue improving the app for our users in line with our roadmap.

The best way to submit feedback, report bugs, add a new feature to the app or improve upon an existing feature is to open a Github issue. Please be sure to include your operating system, device, version number, and steps to reproduce reported bugs. Keep in mind that all participants will be expected to follow our code of conduct.
