DigiSpine

A digital backbone for functionally networking business applications to enable seamless interaction with business data.

Overview

DigiSpine provides a unified, domain-driven digital backbone for manufacturing and production environments. It connects business applications across domains and enables both operational communication and real-time analytics. By treating business processes as event streams and exposing well-defined data products, DigiSpine creates a consistent, scalable foundation for modern industrial solutions.

Motivation

Modern manufacturing and production facilities rely on a growing landscape of specialized business applications—MES, ERP, quality systems, logistics platforms, and analytical tools. These systems typically operate in silos, making it difficult to:

  • Exchange information seamlessly across domains and departments
  • Create integrated, real-time insights
  • Optimize production processes end-to-end

DigiSpine addresses these challenges by enabling a functionally networked ecosystem based on domain-driven modeling, event streaming, and self-service data products.

Goals

Operational Communication

  • Seamless exchange of business-critical information between operational and strategic domains
  • Clear domain boundaries and shared language via DDD
  • Streamlined workflows across production, logistics, quality, maintenance, and planning

Real-Time Analytics

  • Continuous monitoring and optimization of manufacturing and production processes
  • Generation of analytical event streams derived from operational streams
  • Real-time and batch data products for analytics, BI, and AI systems

Design Approach

Domain-Driven Design (DDD)

DigiSpine uses DDD principles to ensure that the software model matches the real-world domain:

  • Ubiquitous language
  • Explicit boundaries
  • Subdomains mapped to self-contained components
  • Alignment with domain experts to ensure correctness and usability

Self-Contained Systems (SCS)

DigiSpine follows a Self-Contained Systems architecture:

  • One SCS architecture per domain (TODO: add SCS link)
  • One SCS per subdomain, providing high autonomy and loose coupling
  • Clear interfaces for operational and analytical data flows

Core Ideas of DigiSpine

1. Operational Streams

The production process is represented as continuous streams of DomainEvents describing what happens on the shop floor.
(TODO: add image/diagram)

2. Analytical Streams

Analytical streams are derived from operational streams and are exposed by SCS components. They power:

  • Real-time dashboards
  • Machine learning applications
  • Predictive maintenance
  • Quality analytics

3. (Real-Time) Data Products

Following data mesh principles, domain teams expose data products that are:

  • Discoverable
  • Trustworthy
  • Versioned
  • Real-time or batch

These products form the analytical backbone for downstream systems.

Status

Work in progress (WIP).
More sections—such as architecture diagrams, installation, deployment, APIs—will be added as the project evolves.
