History

Chronologically:

• IPython 2.0 was the first release of the widgets, bundled into IPython and referred to as "IPython 2.x widgets"
• IPython 3.0 introduced many improvements to the widgets, referred to as "IPython 3.x widgets"
• ipywidgets 4.x was the first standalone release of the widgets
• ipywidgets 5.x decouples the widget frontend from the notebook frontend, allowing widgets to be used outside of the notebook
