A reference for the only mutable part reduces the boilerplate. A separate tokenizer is not necessary for S-expressions.

The changes should improve maintenance in the long run.
"[1 2)" is now accepted as a vector. This is easy to revert if necessary, but seems consistent with most core functions returning
nilon bad arguments.
