Reading and IPython notebook pre-lecture assignments

These assignments should be completed before the indicated class period. Completed notebooks should be uploaded to blackboard.

How to open an IPython notebook

Use one of the computers in the library computer lab. Click the link to the notebook below. Then right click 'download notebook' in the top-right corner of your browser. Select 'Save link as...' and save the file to a directory. Then open a terminal, go to the directory where you saved the notebook, and type 'ipython notebook'. This will open a new browser tab. Select the downloaded notebook from the list in the browser.

Week 2

Before Saturday's lecture:

• Read Chapter 2, up to the end of section 2.10.)
• Read The eigenvalues of tridiagonal matrices

Week 1

Before Tuesday:

• Read Chapter 1 of the text
• Complete the following notebooks:
  • Introduction to Numpy and Matplotlib
  • Finite differences

You may also find it useful to look at the following notebooks:

• Running code in IPython notebooks
• Basic output
• Plotting
• Markdown Cells

Finally, it is a good idea to review appendices A and B of the text; you should be comfortable with the material in them.
