A Duolingo-style web application designed to teach Biblical Hebrew in a structured, accessible, and beginner-friendly way.
The Hebrew Old Testament text used in this application is the Westminster Leningrad Codex (WLC).
- The WLC text is public domain.
- Source files were obtained from the Open Scriptures Hebrew Bible project.
- This application uses only the public-domain WLC text and does not include morphology, lemmas, or annotations.
The purpose of this project is to bring a Duolingo-like learning experience to the study of Biblical Hebrew.
While there are many tools available for learning modern Hebrew, learners who wish to study Biblical Hebrew—particularly for understanding the Old Testament in its original language—are far less well supported. Existing resources are often fragmented, academic, or difficult to approach without prior language experience.
This project aims to fill that gap.
This platform is intended to serve as a launching point for students of Biblical Hebrew by:
- Teaching the basics of Biblical Hebrew in a clear, structured progression
- Emphasizing foundational grammar, vocabulary, and reading skills
- Providing an experience that is interactive, guided, and approachable
- Equipping learners with the tools they need to continue their studies independently
Rather than replacing advanced or academic study, the goal is to prepare learners so they can confidently move on to deeper textual and theological exploration.
- Structured lessons with clear progression
- Incremental difficulty, similar to language-learning apps
- Focus on comprehension over memorization alone
- Designed for learners with no prior Hebrew experience
- Students of the Bible
- Seminary and religion students
- Independent learners interested in Old Testament study
- Anyone seeking a structured introduction to Biblical Hebrew
This project is under active development.
Current work focuses on:
- Core learning platform infrastructure
- Secure user authentication
- Clean architecture to support future lesson content
Lesson content, exercises, and progression systems will be built on top of this foundation.
To provide an accessible, structured, and engaging entry point into Biblical Hebrew that empowers learners to grow in understanding, confidence, and capability as they study the Old Testament.
