Remarks on Google Scholar data
Citation counts for 2023 decreased by ~10% vs the 2024 release. Spot checks indicate that this may reflect a more accurate prediction of the total number of citations on the search result landing page [1], but perhaps also some change in methodology (e.g. concerning deduplication, or change in policy for what sources to include).
In the 2025 release the 2022 citation counts now appear like an outlier (too high). It remains to be seen whether this is a real effect or due to a change in methodology on the Google Scholar side that has not yet propagated through all previous years
[1] For queries with <1000 results, compare approximate number of search results shown on the search landing page vs the number obtained by clicking through to the last search result.

2024 update of atomistic.software
- adds 2023 citation data
- updated citation data for 2022 & 2021 (citation estimates for 2022 appear to have been corrected down a bit)
- relax relevance criterion from 100 citations per year to 50 citations per year (i.e. ~1 citation per week)
- added: COLUMBUS, QMCPACK, ONETEP, exciting, fleur, demon2k, ACEMD, PWMAT
2023 is the first year, where citations to free codes have overtaken those to commercial codes.
