Lumio

Open-source cooperative finance for the groups that already save together.

Lumio

Lumio brings transparency, structure, and trust to cooperative savings groups — the ajo and esusu of West Africa, the chamas of East Africa, SACCOs, and the rotating savings circles found everywhere.

Around the world, hundreds of millions of people save and lend through these groups. They run on deep social trust — and on paper ledgers, cash boxes, and spreadsheets. Lumio keeps what makes them work (community, shared ownership, mutual accountability) and replaces the fragile parts (opaque books, lost records, single points of failure) with a transparent, verifiable ledger on public infrastructure.

Overview

A cooperative's money should be as clear to its members as it is to its treasurer.

Lumio puts a group's treasury, contributions, payouts, and decisions on-chain — where every member can verify them and no single person can quietly rewrite them. Funds move under rules the group agrees to, not on blind trust in whoever holds the cash.

Built on Stellar with Soroban smart contracts, Lumio aims to keep costs low and settlement fast, so taking part is never gated by high fees.

Mission

To give every savings group — however informal — financial tools that are:

  • Transparent — every contribution, balance, and payout is verifiable by the members.
  • Shared — ownership and decisions belong to the group, not an intermediary.
  • Accountable — the rules are enforced by code the group can inspect.
  • Accessible — usable by non-technical members, in the patterns they already know.

How Lumio works

  1. A group forms a cooperative and defines its rules — contribution amounts, cycles, and who decides what.
  2. Members contribute into a shared on-chain treasury.
  3. The group proposes and votes on decisions — payouts, new members, rule changes.
  4. Approved payouts and dividends are distributed automatically, according to each member's share.

Every step is recorded on a ledger the whole group can see.

What we're building

Lumio is developed in the open, across three repositories:

Repository What it is
lumio-contracts Soroban (Rust) smart contracts — the on-chain core.
lumio-sdk TypeScript SDK, shared types, and the shared UI / design-system packages.
lumio-app The product surface — a member dashboard, an admin panel, and the API.

The on-chain core is organized around four contracts:

  • Treasury — pooled contributions, balances, and custody.
  • Governance — the proposals a group deliberates on.
  • Voting — how members decide.
  • Dividends — fair distribution of shares and payouts.

Core principles

  • Members first. The group owns its money and its decisions.
  • Transparent by default. If members can't verify it, it isn't done.
  • Open source. Licensed under Apache-2.0 — inspect it, fork it, build on it.
  • Meet people where they are. Familiar cooperative patterns, not crypto jargon.

Built on

  • Stellar / Soroban — smart contracts, written in Rust.
  • TypeScript — the SDK and shared libraries.
  • Next.js + NestJS — the member and admin apps, and the API.
  • "Ledger of Light" — Lumio's own design system.

Status

🚧 Early, and building in the open. The foundations — contract interfaces, the SDK, and the application shell with the full design system — are in place. Follow along, open issues, and watch this org as the pieces come online.
