Cheating

The question type was designed for low stakes summative assessment. It is primarily a learning tool. The only way to be confident that work submitted is the work of the student is a mix of Proctoring, i.e. watching the student and then to engage the student on the subject to confirm they understand the responses that were committed. It is not possibly to reliably automate that process and involving skilled humans can be expensive.

I was a teacher between 2003 and 2014 and frequently received submissions that were not created by the student. I generally dealt with this by asking the student a few quesitons about the work. I found this a highly effective way of authenticating the author of the response.

It is possible to manipulate responses to this question type so a student will always get full marks. However it will be obvious from the content of the response what has happened see this description of the process. Read about prompt injection here.

This may be a reason to set up questions without any automated marking criteria.
