Sensorless Field‑Oriented Control of PMSM with Power Factor Correction on Microchip MCHV‑230VAC‑1.5kW Development Board

This example demonstrates sensorless Field‑Oriented Control (FOC) of a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) powered from a 240V AC mains supply using the Microchip MCHV‑230VAC‑1.5kW Development Board.

A single Simulink® model implements both software‑controlled Power Factor Correction (PFC) and sensorless PMSM motor control. The PFC stage boosts the 240V AC input to a regulated 380V DC bus while maintaining low total harmonic distortion (THD <5%) and a power factor greater than 0.99 at rated load.

The sensorless motor control algorithm (observer-based position/speed estimation method) uses the I‑F (current–frequency) based startup strategy, ensuring reliable motor startup across a wide range of load conditions and a smooth transition to closed‑loop speed control.

Setup

  1. Download the repository and extract the contents.
  2. Connect the development board to 240V mains AC supply
  3. Connect a 400V three phase PMSM to the kit.
  4. Build and flash the model contained in the repository.
  5. Control the motor using the knob on the kit.
