## Portable Schema

Applying a [portable schema document](portable-schema.md) is also blocked while a branch is active. The schema executor performs direct DDL (`ALTER`/`DROP TABLE`) operations that are not branch-aware, so schema applies must be run from the main context.

routes DDL (`CREATE`/`ALTER`/`DROP TABLE`) to the active branch's PostgreSQL schema
via `_get_schema_connection()`. Custom Object Type and field metadata rows remain
exempt from branch tracking (they are written to main and do not appear in the
branch diff). The schema import UI and REST apply endpoint show a warning when a
branch is active. For greenfield schema rollout across environments, prefer
applying from the main context unless you intentionally want schema changes on a
branch.
