Welcome to the Odyssey wiki!
Hi guys. I will use this Wiki to communicate the status of Odyssey. I'll post major milestones here... and more!
thanks... yow, bill
Huzzah to Odyssey!
- Wed May 25, 2016 - Odyssey alpha test
- Fri Jun 3, 2016 - Odyssey V1.0 production release (woot!)
- Sat Oct 15, 2016 - Odyssey V1.1 production release, great work Kyle L!
- Sat Jan 27, 2018 - Odyssey V1.2 production release, great work by Kevin M!
- Sat Jun 1, 2019 - special Odyssey 2019 update non-release (no new version number) to eliminate security alerts in outdate versions of gems we were using
Every once in a while, I'll add a new entry to the wiki on how usage of Odyssey is going at Sharing Connections.
- Jun 15, 2016 - 80 pickups, 25 days... all good
- Jun 30, 2016 - 141 pickups, 25 days... great! 🐙 🐙 🐙
- Jul 30, 2016 - 241 pickups, 25 days... have to add some days after Aug, we'll see how it goes
- Aug 25, 2016 - 322 pickups, 29 days... more pickups and added some days, good usage!
- Sep 30, 2016 - 442 pickups, 42 days... going strong!
- Oct 4, 2016 - Great meeting at SC with Ryan today. They are now using Odyssey to schedule and track their store pickups. Yow! And I snapped a smidge of the whiteboard... Odyssey training. Yes!
- Oct 15, 2016 - 507 pickups, 47 days... fantastico!
- Dec 27, 2016 - 717 pickups, 67 schedule days... excellent.
- Apr 15, 2019 - 2,872 pickups, 322 schedule days... Odyssey lives! I did a stats check because Odyssey needs a tune-up. Soon, hopefully, we'll be doing some gem updates and the BIG move to Bootstrap 4.
- Aug 19, 2020 - We're up to 3,800 pickups over 420 days. Wow. I logged in and checked because a of (kind of) scary Heroku message that the database needed maintenance. It wasn't any big deal, thankfully. Viva La Odyssey!
- Jun 10, 2021 - About 5 years...4,476 pickups over 490 days. Excellent! Coming soon...the Rails 6 update. It's a killer. (argh)
- Jan 6, 2022 - Odyssey is ending (see section below)...4,948 pickups over 530 days.

I expect this to be my final Odyssey update. Our stats this morning:
- Number of pickups on record: 1010
- Number of days on record: 105
Wow. A thousand pickups over more than 100 days. Fantastico!
Odyssey is a great success. Congrats to all the students who made this project happen; your code is hard at work as we speak. This was a truly outstanding team! odyssey495.herokuapp.com/about
I hope you're all doing well. Stop by and say hello some time. Huzzah!

Odyssey has been an unqualified success in it's 5+ years of use at Sharing Connections. The usage stats above confirm this belief.
An important point: I have never gotten a report from Sharing Connections (SC) that Odyssey had a bug or crashed or whatever. This is a testament to our incredible team of students and to technology. Ruby on Rails allowed us to work at a higher level than programming languages like Java. Also, automated testing is a foundational component of Rails.
So, why is Odyssey ending? When we wrote Odyssey, SC wanted explicit control over the schedule and pickup data. Donors would call SC and then a secretary or other volunteer would enter the data into Odyssey. Well, in 2021, this model is changing. SC now wants donors to 1) enter their own data directly, and 2) use mobile devices to do it. In other words, SC is changing their paradigm to better match today's tech and user idiom. This change would have been a fun capstone project, but I don't teach that course any more.
On a personal note, I'm still at Noctrl as a part-time professor, but I'm not teaching any courses this term. Whatever the future holds, your best bet at contacting me is via my email [email protected].
Odyssey!
thanks... yow, bill
