Description

How Has This Been Tested?

Merge criteria:

  • The commits are squashed in a cohesive manner and have meaningful messages.
  • Testing instructions have been added in the PR body (for PRs involving changes that are not immediately obvious).
  • The developer has manually tested the changes and verified that the changes work

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added the ability to trigger a container image build and push for a pull request by commenting with /build-push-pr-image. The image is tagged with the PR number and pushed to the registry.
    • Automated deletion of the PR-specific container image tag from the registry when the pull request is closed.
    • Extended PR comment commands to include /build-push-pr-image for label and reaction management.
  • Documentation

    • Updated workflow documentation to describe the new /build-push-pr-image command and its effects.

Walkthrough

This update introduces two new GitHub Actions workflows and modifies existing workflow logic and documentation. The first new workflow builds and pushes a container image to a registry when a pull request comment contains the command /build-push-pr-image. The second new workflow deletes the associated container image tag from the registry when the pull request is closed. The existing workflow for label management is updated to recognize the new command. Documentation is updated to describe the new command and its behavior, and an outdated planned feature is removed.

Changes

File(s) Change Summary
.github/workflows/add-remove-labels.yml Extended workflow trigger to recognize /build-push-pr-image in addition to existing commands for label management.
.github/workflows/delete-image-tag.yml New: Adds a workflow that deletes a container image tag from Quay.io when a PR is closed.
.github/workflows/push-container-on-comment.yml New: Adds a workflow to build and push a container image on PR comment containing /build-push-pr-image.
docs/GITHUB_WORKFLOWS.md Updated documentation to include the new /build-push-pr-image command and removed a deprecated planned feature.
.github/workflows/scripts/pr_workflow.py Added support for new action push-container-on-comment, modified user verification to return boolean, and updated control flow accordingly.

Poem

🐇
A rabbit hops through workflows new,
Building images on your queue.
With a comment, magic starts,
Pushing tags with coder’s arts.
When the PR hops away,
The image tag won’t stay—
All tidy now, hooray!

16-18: Refine grammar and clarity of the new workflow bullet.

  • Add the article “the” before “Quay” for fluency (“to the Quay repository”).
  • Insert a comma after “however” for correct punctuation.
  • Consider using “Quay.io” explicitly to match other references.

Can you add a step to the action that checks for permissions to push the build to quay?

Can you add a step to the action that checks for permissions to push the build to quay?

No need for that. At the end a comment would be added to the PR telling us if push to quay worked. So far pushing to quay is working fine (we have already enabled the workflow updating quay image on merge).

104-117: Significant behavior change in authorization logic.

The verify_allowed_user method now returns a boolean instead of exiting the process. This is a fundamental change that allows more flexible handling of unauthorized users in different contexts.

Consider adding a docstring to clarify the new behavior:

    def verify_allowed_user(self) -> bool:
+ """
+ Verify if the user is allowed to perform restricted actions.
+
+ Returns:
+ bool: True if user is a member of opendatahub-tests-contributors team, False otherwise
+ """
        org: Organization = self.gh_client.get_organization("opendatahub-io")
docs/GITHUB_WORKFLOWS.md (1)

16-18: Documentation for the new command has grammar issues.

The documentation clearly explains the new /build-push-pr-image command, but contains a few grammatical errors.

Apply these fixes:

- To build and push image to quay, add `/build-push-pr-image` in a comment.
- This would create an image with tag pr-<pr_number> to quay repository. This image tag,
- however would be deleted on PR merge or close action.
+ To build and push an image to Quay, add `/build-push-pr-image` in a comment.
+ This would create an image with tag pr-<pr_number> to the Quay repository. This image tag,
+ however, would be deleted on PR merge or close action.

37-43: Implementation of the new build-push image action looks good.

The new action build_push_pr_image_action_name is properly defined and added to the supported actions set. This is consistent with the PR's purpose of supporting the /build-push-pr-image comment.

63-65: Good improvement to error message.

Including the actual invalid action in the error message makes it easier to debug when an unsupported action is provided.

136-139: Correctly handling the new action's authorization.

The implementation properly checks if the user is authorized before proceeding with the image build/push action. Exiting with status code 1 on unauthorized users is appropriate for workflow automation.

140-143:

❓ Verification inconclusive

Behavioral change for the add-remove-labels action.

This change makes the code more consistent by applying the same authorization pattern to different actions. However, it introduces a subtle behavior change:

Previously, unauthorized users attempting to add/remove labels would cause the script to exit. Now, the script continues execution but skips the label modification step.

Verify that this behavior change doesn't affect any dependent workflows.

🏁 Script executed:

#!/bin/bash
# Check if there are any workflows or scripts that may depend on the previous exit behavior
rg -A 5 "add-remove-labels.*exit.*status" .github/

Length of output: 52

🏁 Script executed:

#!/bin/bash
# 1. Look for any exit or sys.exit calls around the add/remove labels logic
echo "Searching for exit statements in pr_workflow.py"
rg -n "exit" -A3 .github/workflows/scripts/pr_workflow.py || true

# 2. Find where pr_workflow.py is invoked in the workflows to see if exit codes are checked
echo -e "\nSearching for invocations of pr_workflow.py in .github/workflows"
rg -n "pr_workflow.py" -A2 .github/workflows

Length of output: 2282

Behavioral change for the add-remove-labels action
The refactor now skips add_remove_pr_labels() when verify_allowed_user() is false instead of exiting with a non-zero status. Unauthorized users will no longer fail the step—they’ll silently continue the workflow.

Please confirm that no workflows or downstream steps depend on the previous exit-on-failure behavior.

Affected location:

  • .github/workflows/scripts/pr_workflow.py around lines 140–143
docs/GITHUB_WORKFLOWS.md (1)

13-15: Documentation formatting is improved.

The updated formatting for adding and removing labels is clearer and more consistent.

* Add basic InferenceGraph deployment check

This adds a test that deploys an InferenceGraph (IG), sends an inference request to the IG and verifies that the request succeeds.

The deployed InferenceGraph is based on the example on the KServe documentation available in the following URL: https://kserve.github.io/website/0.15/modelserving/inference_graph/image_pipeline/. * Add basic InferenceGraph deployment check (opendatahub-io#233)

The example was adapted to run in openvino (which is a supported server in ODH), rather than TorchServe.
