The original drop required that nbiff be set up to autorun in your Desktop Environment. Issue #1 suggested what I believe is a better idea. That is, to provide a wrapper-script which handles nbiff and Thunderbird:

  1. Start nbiff backgrounded.
  2. Start Thunderbird.
  3. When Thunderbird completes, terminate nbiff.
