What

Reorganizes the flat test/ directory into per-area subdirectories, and
splits the 16k-line test/test_tensordict.py (607 KB) into nine themed
modules.

test_tabular.py also moved here.

Other files moved by area (pure git mv, history preserved):
tensorclass/ (tensorclass, typedtensordict, compatibility), nn/ (nn, fx,
functorch), compile/, memmap/ (memmap, h5, td_memmap_split), store/,
distributed/ (distributed, ucxx), utils/ (utils, setup, *_split).

_utils_internal.py, conftest.py, and smoke_test.py stay at the test/
root.

Why

test_tensordict.py had grown to 16,015 lines, making it slow to open,
navigate, and review, and the flat test/ directory mixed ~24 unrelated
suites. Per-area subdirs also let you run a slice (e.g. pytest test/nn).

How it stays correct

  • No tests lost or duplicated: every class and method was sliced out via
    AST (not hand-editing). A programmatic conservation check confirms the nine
    new files contain exactly the original 25 classes / 714 methods, with no
    class appearing twice and identical method sets.
  • Imports keep resolving: the bare from _utils_internal import ... used
    by several suites relies on test/ being on sys.path. Keeping
    _utils_internal.py + conftest.py at the test/ root preserves this — the
    root conftest.py makes pytest prepend test/ before any subdir module
    loads (verified with a standalone pytest sandbox). The fbcode branch uses the
    absolute pytorch.tensordict.test._utils_internal, unaffected by location.
  • No __init__.py anywhere under test/, so pytest's prepend import mode
    is unchanged; testpaths = test auto-discovers the new layout with no config
    change.
  • Helpers/fixtures travel with their sole consumer (device_fixture /
    _path_td_sync → generic, _compare_tensors_identity / _to_float
    methods, _pool_fixt → mp).
  • New files: unused imports trimmed (ruff F401), formatted with ufmt
    (black + usort), clean under flake8 --config=setup.cfg.
  • .github/labeler.yml globs repointed to the new paths.

Note

The full pytest suite was not run locally (no torch environment available), so
the live collection/run is left to CI. The source-level conservation check and
the import-mechanism sandbox give high confidence the move is
behavior-preserving. Separately, Meta-internal fbcode TARGETS that enumerate
test paths will need a matching internal update.

Split the 16k-line test/test_tensordict.py into nine themed modules under
test/tensordict/ (generic, methods, lazy, nameddims, nontensor, repr, mp,
errors, misc) and move the remaining flat test files into per-area
subdirectories: tensorclass/, nn/, compile/, memmap/, store/, distributed/,
utils/.

Shared infrastructure (_utils_internal.py, conftest.py) and smoke_test.py
stay at the test/ root, so the bare `from _utils_internal import ...` imports
keep resolving via the root conftest's sys.path insertion. No __init__.py is
added, which keeps pytest's prepend import mode intact. pytest auto-discovery
(testpaths = test) picks up the new layout with no config change.

The split preserves every class and test method exactly (25 classes, 714
methods, verified via AST). Helpers and fixtures travel with their sole
consumer (device_fixture/_path_td_sync -> generic, _compare_tensors_identity/
_to_float -> methods, _pool_fixt -> mp). Per-file unused imports were trimmed
and the new files formatted with ufmt.

Updated .github/labeler.yml globs to the new test paths.

Resolves the modify/delete conflict on test/test_tensordict.py from
#1725 (NonTensor pad / boolean-mask bugfix). That commit added 14 test
methods to the monolith, which this branch had split into test/tensordict/.
The new methods were rerouted into the corresponding split files,
preserving their original classes:
  - 7 test_pad_nontensor* -> test/tensordict/test_generic.py (TestGeneric)
  - 3 test_lazy_*         -> test/tensordict/test_lazy.py (TestLazyStackedTensorDict)
  - test_linked_list_str + 3 test_nontensorstack_* -> test/tensordict/test_nontensor.py (TestNonTensorData)

Verified the split union equals origin/main's test_tensordict.py exactly
(25 classes, 728 methods). The #1725 test_distributed.py change merged
onto its renamed path test/distributed/test_distributed.py.

Moving test files one level deeper (test/<area>/) broke resources that
were located relative to __file__:

- test/tensorclass/test_tensorclass.py: tensorclass.pyi -> parents[2]
- test/tensordict/test_generic.py: artifacts/ -> Path(__file__).parent.parent
- test/utils/test_setup.py: repo root (version.txt, pyproject.toml) -> parents[2]

Also makes TestLazyStackedTensorDict.test_arithmetic_ops deterministic:
with ragged=True it drew three random middle-dim sizes from randint(1, 5),
which collided ~6% of the time and left the stack non-ragged, so norm() did
not raise. The reorg changed test execution order (hence RNG state) and
surfaced this. Use distinct sizes (2, 3, 4) so the ragged case is always
ragged.
