d430 gmsl clarification

Hi All,

Please could I have some clarification. I appreciate this might be a bit too early to answer, however, I see in the (v2.56.4) release there is reference to "Support for D430 GMSL module"

I also see in some github issues such as here: #13966 that this at least looks a possibility.

Please could you clarify if there is (early) support for using a d430 module on a d457 depth module board such as this: https://www.digikey.co.uk/en/products/detail/realsense/82635DSD457ASIC/16915892

I can also see from here: https://realsenseai.com/products/modules-processors/ that the d430 only contains a pair of IR sensors and the RGB sensor is separate.

In the above issue, it looks like a separate RGB sensor is able to be connected which sounds very interesting. I appreciate this may require some implementation work to make things work, but if you could give some more information on how to interface an RGB sensor to a d430 board , that would be very interesting. I also notice that the d457 product datasheet is unavailable on the realsense website.

If there were datasheets you could supply for the d430 module and gmsl depth module that would be very useful.

Hi @tom-robo Existing D430 modules do not have GMSL capability.

Code may be added to the SDK by the RealSense development team for the purposes of internally testing possible future products. The inclusion of these product names is not a guarantee that it will be released as a final product.

RealSense cannot comment on possible future products. The best course of action is to assume that a product does not exist until the day that it actually is announced on the RealSense website or RealSense Store.

Hi Marty, I appreciate there is no "consumer" focused product where the d430 module and GMSL are integrated together.

However, as an OEM, we are looking to whether it would be worth investing development time into a GMSL-based system rather than relying on PoE cameras. The one sticking point we have is our application demands the FOV parameters of a d430 module rather than d450.

From this issue #13966 it looks like that with some implementation challenges it would be possible to assemble, or at least evaluate, such a system possibly with a custom RGB sensor. This would be very interesting to us, particularly as we have the capability to produce a custom housing for such a device.

It is undeniable that d430 modules and d4 VPU GMSL processing units are able to be bought, however there seems to be a real shortage of even datasheets on the realsense website/ Digikey (broken links) on these components at the moment.

Please could you provide me with this information and, if possible, some more context on the challenges/ considerations of implementing such a system.

As you are an OEM, it may be worth considering signing an NDA agreement with RealSense, Inc so that you can access product information that cannot be disclosed publicly and have discussions directly with RealSense engineers on our private Zendesk support channel. I can arrange for your contact details to be passed to the appropriate RealSense team member if that is something that would be of interest to your company.

RealSense now have a camera model with a PoE connector, the D555. At present its new-generation ASIC module is not available as a separately purchasable component, so it may not be suitable for integration into your own product if you need to integrate circuit boards rather than a cased camera.

If you wish to use a custom RGB sensor instead of the RealSense one then I can understand the appeal of the D430 module over D450 as D430 does not have an integrated RGB sensor. If you plan to connect the sensor to the Vision Processor D4 then the custom-chosen RGB sensor should be a MIPI CSI-2 module.

You would likely only need Digikey links for connector parts if you were integrating the Vision Processor D4 as a chip onto your own circuit motherboard instead of using the Vision Processor D4 Board products that already have all the connectors and their housings integrated on the module.

If you are planning to integrate the D4 as a chip onto your motherboard then page 99 onwards (the 'System Integration' section) of the datasheet document 'D400 Series Product Family Datasheet' provides integration details.
