The kernel patches modify the I2C subsystem header (`i2c.h`), which changes the CRC of all exported I2C symbols. The boot initrd contains cached kernel modules that must be regenerated to match the new kernel, otherwise modules like `ucsi_ccg` will fail to load with "disagrees about version of symbol" errors.
