tmux: pane-border-format (amux status) silently inert in deployed chezmoi config #144

Description

@stanfish06

Finding

Commits 12d3926 and a4bed70 (2026-07-31) added an amux pane-title integration to both tmux config copies:

  • tmux/linux/.tmux.conf (reference mirror)
  • home-chezmoi/dot_tmux.conf.tmpl (the actual deployed source, per .chezmoiroot)

Both got the same if-shell ... { set -g pane-border-format '...' } block. However, pane-border-format only has a visible effect when pane-border-status is enabled (tmux default is off).

The mirror (tmux/linux/.tmux.conf) already had set -g pane-border-status top set independently (line 24, predates this change). The chezmoi template never set it anywhere. So on the machine that actually deploys home-chezmoi/ via chezmoi, the new amux status line added in a4bed70 doesn't render — pane borders stay off entirely.

This is also a fresh instance of the drift pattern already tracked in #140 (chezmoi-managed source vs. top-level "reference mirror" diverging) — in this case in the opposite direction: a setting present only in the unused mirror, missing from the file that's actually deployed.

Fix

Added set -g pane-border-status top to home-chezmoi/dot_tmux.conf.tmpl right above the amux block, matching what the mirror already had. See PR.

Priority

Low/cosmetic (no leak, no breakage of existing bindings) but worth a quick merge since the amux integration is currently a no-op as deployed.

    Resolved by commit 901592a on master, which added set -g pane-border-status top directly above the amux if-shell block in home-chezmoi/dot_tmux.conf.tmpl. Closing.
