sql repo code contained various potential bugs (using $N arguments, not a sqlite feature) and inconsistences (not always using our type helpers) that appeared when using a different driver

Goals
SQL repo code contained various potential bugs (using $N arguments, not a sqlite feature) and inconsistences (not always using our type helpers) that appeared when using a different driver for SQLite -- didn't end up making the switch, but still quite informative and seems prudent to fix. (especially the $N arguments, which is not canonical SQLite syntax)
