Subconscious Beta FAQ

What's in Subconscious Beta?

  • Basic integration with Noosphere protocol.
  • Personal sphere: your sphere is your personal data store on Noosphere. It's secured with your private key, and belongs only to you.
  • Related notes: see connections to related ideas underneath each of your notes.
  • Local drafts: these notes are local to your device. Only you can see them. Any old notes from Subconscious Alpha will be converted to drafts.
  • Public notes: publish notes publicly to Noosphere for others to follow.
  • Follow others to meld minds. Public notes from people you follow will bubble up in your search and related notes.

What's missing, and what's next?

Subconscious is an early beta. We've closed the loop with Noosphere, but this is just a foundation. Here are some features we're still working on:

  • Private end-to-end encrypted notes: Noosphere notes are currently all public. We're working on private end-to-end encrypted notes so you can sync between devices while maintaining total privacy.
  • Block-based editor: the current editor is very basic. We're working on an updated editor with Notion-like block editing for a future Beta version.
  • In-editor transcludes: see previews of notes you link to, while you type
  • Updates feed: see updates from spheres you follow.

...And lots more in the pipeline.

Will my data migrate from Subconscious Alpha?

Yes, when you upgrade via TestFlight, your local notes will be migrated to local drafts. These drafts exist only on your device and are not shared to Noosphere.

Will it be possible to self-host?

Technically yes. All of the infrastructure needed to self-host is open source and developed in the open on Github. And, that infrastructure is designed for a world where networks may peer with each other in arbitrary configurations. But, there is an important caveat:

Subconscious Cloud is isolated for the period of the Beta as we continue to develop features to support a safe and healthy decentralized network. It is technically possible to self-host and create your own network, but your mileage and safety may vary, and you will not be able to peer with Subconscious Cloud. As a consequence, inbound and outbound links will not work across self-hosted networks and Subconscious Cloud for the term of the Beta.

As we develop safety and robustness features in the network infrastructure, we will relax the peering restrictions of Subconscious Cloud. Our goal is to enable users to seamlessly traverse links spanning arbitrary networks.

Will my data be available through IPFS?

Technically yes, but the same caveat mentioned in "Is it possible to self-host?" applies. Subconscious Cloud is isolated for the period of the Beta. Although we syndicate all content to IPFS nodes that we run ourselves, our IPFS nodes are currently isolated from the rest of the internet.

Self-hosting users who can configure their own IPFS node may choose for themselves whether or not to peer with a public network.
