ここの存在確認、model.ExistWordを事前にhandler側の関数で呼び出してやるのがいいんじゃない？

そもそもdb.Selectを使うとsql.ErrNoRowsは返ってこないです

model.ExistWordを使えばこの考慮はいらないはず
