Looking at https://github.com/twitter/twemoji/pull/1440/changes#diff-a573cd5e3f5d1e99cc08622cc67e863504c9f5cc373b5354a2072fa1b949fae0 you'll need to delete the svg as well, but I would recommend just swapping it out with the 🇵🇸 flag, and to save on space just have the old flagged linked to the new one

Since we're out here arbitrarly replacing flags, let's delete the Israeli flag too, and replace it with the original Palestinian flag. It only makes sense.

This PR is a textbook example of attempting to perform "brain surgery with a mallet." Beyond the obvious political violence in it which cross GitHub code of conduct, it also ignores the reality that the Israel flag emoji is deeply integrated into the global technical fabric—from Unicode standards and CLDR data to ISO 3166-1 country codes.

I suggest to close this PR on terms that it is not compliant with basically anything

I think it would help if the maintainers chimed in here.

What standard is the repo following to determine which image to use?

Like you, I also assumed that it was ISO_3611, but since #1440 got merged based on ambiguous public opinion, then this PR is a shoe-in, given thoroughly documented global opinion overwhelmingly does not recognize the legitimacy of the apartheid state in its current form.

I agree the approach may be crude, and I personally prefer to just replace the .png and .svg with the 🇵🇸 emoji for backward compatibility, but it's good enough for now since all major browsers and operating systems have built-in fallbacks.

Good software engineering is about having clear standards, backing your decisions with data, and knowing when to make trade-offs.

Hope that clears things up!

Twitter do need an ISIS flag if the flag of Israel is allowed. Both are modern opressive religious regimes founded by terrorist organizations.

Agree. though keep in mind that:

... since #1440 got merged based on ambiguous public opinion, then this PR is a shoe-in

And then:

Good software engineering is about having clear standards, backing your decisions with data, and knowing when to make trade-offs.

Did not see any statement in #1440 that it was based on "ambiguous public opinion".

  • If you think it was wrong to merge that one, then why are you even submitting this one?
  • If you think Change Iran's flag to the original Sun & Lion #1440 was right, then you should clearly support the existence of both the Israeli flag and the Palestinian flag. Not the destruction of the Israeli flag without attending to consequences or reality

What's worse than AI slop? Human slop!

Utter garbage PR showing the toxic mind of many of you here.

Israel is a legitimate state, with a legitimate flag unlike the made up state of palestine.

Now now, please keep it professional, no need to violate Github's Code of Conduct, at the moment this is a perfectly valid PR based on the evidence we've been given

Consistency and correctness are core tenets of good engineering too.

Right now, this repo is in a very ambiguous state;

  1. According to the README.md "Twemoji v14.0 adheres to the [Unicode 14.0 spec](https://unicode.org/versions/Unicode14.0.0/) and supports the [Emoji 14.0 spec](https://www.unicode.org/reports/tr51/tr51-21.html). We do not support custom emoji., which means it inherits ISO-3611, in which case Change Iran's flag to the original Sun & Lion #1440 needs to be reverted

  2. This repo is following a popularity mechanism, in which case this PR is valid. Maybe the maintainers don't trust Pew Research Centre data and want to conduct a poll here, but I suspect the result will be the same no matter how many times they repeat it

  3. The maintainers are just doing whatever they feel like, in which case this repo needs to update it's README.md to reflect this and not make false claims about adherence to an international standard. There's a reason things like international standards and laws exist, you can't just ignore them haphazardly - or at least you shouldn't be able to - without consequence

Happy to contribute any of the above PRs once the maintainers make things clear 😊!

Twitter should not recognise the existence of Israel. Israel is a terror state created by Zionist terrorist organizations such as Lehi, Irgun and Haganah. They've killed hundreds, if not thousands of Europeans and Americans directly or by proxy (ISIS/Al-qaida) in their goal to found Israel, and by extracting profits from Britain and USA in the forms of Rothschild banks.
