Level 2 grant application for builder.love

Project Abstract

builder.love is a comparative data and analytics platform that empowers blockchain builders with deep insight and peer validation of blockchain research and development trends, so that builders can make better decisions about how they invest their time.

Grant level

  • Level 1: Up to $10,000, 2 approvals
  • Level 2: Up to $30,000, 3 approvals
  • Level 3: Unlimited, 5 approvals (for >$100k: Web3 Foundation Council approval)

Application Checklist

  • The application template has been copied and aptly renamed (project_name.md).
  • I have read the application guidelines.
  • Payment details have been provided (Polkadot AssetHub (USDC & DOT) address in the application and bank details via email, if applicable).
  • I understand that an agreed upon percentage of each milestone will be paid in vested DOT, to the Polkadot address listed in the application.
  • I am aware that, in order to receive a grant, I (and the entity I represent) have to successfully complete a KYC/KYB check.
  • The software delivered for this grant will be released under an open-source license specified in the application.
  • The initial PR contains only one commit (squash and force-push if needed).
  • The grant will only be announced once the first milestone has been accepted (see the announcement guidelines).
  • I prefer the discussion of this application to take place in a private Element/Matrix channel. My username is: @_______:matrix.org (change the homeserver if you use a different one)

Thanks for application @treboryatska the site looks nice but neither Polkadot or its parachains are present in these graphs. Correct me if I'm wrong, but at this point it is my opinion that this project isn't the best fit for our grants program. Also because the deliverables are mostly web related.

Hi @keeganquigley thanks for your response. Polkadot shows up in both the top 100 by forks and stars charts. Polkadot can also be seen in builder segments, as a "Top Project" if you filter by Rust language.

The base dataset for the current charts is from the Electric Capital crypto-ecosystems repo: https://github.com/electric-capital/crypto-ecosystems/tree/master

There are a few datasets for Polkadot in this repo. Here is the main one: https://github.com/electric-capital/crypto-ecosystems/blob/master/data/ecosystems/p/polkadot-network.toml

I think it is a good fit. The mission of builder.love is to help blockchain developers and researchers assess the legitimacy of blockchain ecosystems. The existence of such a platform will help legitimate blockchain builders outside of Polkadot identify Polkadot as a legitimate, top tier ecosystem that they should invest their time in.

By legitimate ecosystem, I mean an ecosystem that has a dedicated community of developers and researchers that are interested in building technology that solves problems and makes people's lives better.

Also because the deliverables are mostly web related.

The current web application (builder.love) is an MVP. We will develop the interface that builders tell us they need to validate their time investments.

ah thanks for pointing it out @treboryatska I stand corrected, I can see it now. But I do stand by my point about the deliverables mostly being web-focused. Usually we don't fund general web infra such as sql postgres instances. But we can keep it open to see what other committee members think.

For further consideration, please integrate the delivery tables as shown in the application template. Each milestone should contain the mandatory deliverables 0a. - 0d. including testing and API reference docs. Additionally, please include mock-ups for any front-end deliverables.

Thanks @keeganquigley. I completely understand this point. I think the correct framing for this proposal is not the what (postgres), but the why. If this proposal is successful, it will provide data and analytics to legitimate builders that will help them find legitimate blockchain ecosystems to invest their time in. I applied for a grant from the Web3 Foundation because I see Polkadot as a legitimate ecosystem in this space, and I see a tool like builder.love as complimentary to legitimate blockchain ecosystems.

Working on this now.

Hi @treboryatska the committee was able to discuss your proposal, but unfortunately wasn't able to raise the support needed to accept the application. This is partly because of the issues raised above, but also because we are working on some things internally to integrate the Electric Capital repos so we don't believe this is necessary at this time.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news here, and thanks for all your time & efforts in submitting it. We hope this doesn't deter you from wanting to build in the Polkadot ecosystem.

Thanks for the consideration @keeganquigley.

Quick update on my end: I was able to complete the milestone and all associated deliverables. This means I have production data infrastructure that is ingesting, cleaning, and normalizing the electric capital data, plus a few Github metrics like stars, forks, commits, and contributor graph. I'll be adding to this overtime. You can view the repos with the project code here:

What data are you interested in from the Electric Capital repo?
