@wjbmattingly , This pull has the code for the updated date filter. It still has some of the pitfalls of the number sliders where if the sliders are quite close then the start and end points are kind of mushed but any form of modification just overcomplicates and looks overengineered.
You could use it by just having a "date" option in create data in create_widgets.
