Building custom kernel

How to build a custom kernel to use it with flash installer

Prerequisites

  • a FreeBSD machine to build the kernel on
  • kernel sources installed in /usr/src

Process

  • create a kernel config in /usr/src/sys/i386/conf/ or use conf/ALIX from flash installer repo.
  • build a kernel and install to /tmp (replace ALIX with the name of your kernel if different):
cd /usr/src
sudo make buildkernel KERNCONF=ALIX
sudo make installkernel KERNCONF=ALIX KODIR=/tmp/ALIX
  • tar it up and copy somewhere where the flash installer can find it. It can be a http/ftp location or a path on local file system (we'll use /tmp/alix.txz in this example):
sudo tar -cvJp -C /tmp -f /tmp/alix.txz ALIX
  • Configure flash installer to use your new kernel. Edit etc/alix.conf (or whatever other installer config you use) and point the custom_kernel parameter to where your compressed kernel is stored (it can be a file or http/ftp location). For example:
custom_kernel='/tmp/ALIX.tgz'
