Looks like you've got the majority of the background setup ready to go and I'm excited to see where this PR goes!
I have one request for changing the default build behaviour for XDG and another for pulling out some of the CMakeLists.txt changes you spotted into a separate PR.
there is problem with exodus lib version which I will address later
I will have to change the gold params for this mesh file as well
I need to fix the rti->register_volume() method
