Here is what happened:
A. On Wednesday, John Deck went walking along the beach and found a starfish. He picked it up and brought it back. The next day, he identified it and said “Hey! Let’s have a BioBlitz!”
B. On Thursday, we all went to the beach. Ramona found a shell and identified it right away.
C. Steve saw a bird and identified it as an exciting Northwestern Crow using his bird book (it wasn’t on his life list). John D. shot the bird so that he could examine it better. By this time everyone was tired and either wanted coffee or beer, so the BioBlitz was over.
D. The next day, Mark got here and noticed that Steve had been looking at the book upside down. Mark pointed out that the bird was just a boring northern crow.
E. We tried to give the dead animals to Tuco, but since they weren’t all vertebrates, he would only take the bird. The shell and starfish had to go to Alaska.
F. After the bird specimen sat around in Berkeley for about 3 months, the curators separated it into skin, skeleton, and stomach preps.
G. In 2017, CalPhotos decided to image all of the bird skins in MVZ. The same year, somebody from the Smithsonian went to Alaska and took a tissue sample from the starfish and a couple months later used some of it to sequence a gene. The sequence went into GenBank.
H. In 2025, somebody from Woods Hole was doing a study of what crows eat in the intertidal and took a sample from the stomach prep of the crow.
The URIs in the examples are all fake, although the arctos: namespace is the real one for MVZ guids.

- The SELECT query form can be used to obtain the URIs of resources which satisfy the query patterns that you specify. Here is a simple one which will produce the URIs of all of the specimens:

(I realize that I should have used dwctype:PreservedSpecimen, but Guid-O-Matic did it this way and I didn’t want to take the time to change it.) The “a” is a shortcut for “rdf:type”. The “LIMIT 50” is optional, but it’s probably good to put it there just in case. There are many other triples in the store and if you picked the right thing, you might get many hits. Click on Execute. Depending on how dumb or smart your computer is, it may be able to open the results file or you may have to tell it a text editor that can be used.
- You can restrict the number of specimens that come up by adding additional patterns that must be satisfied. Change the pattern to:

SPARQL has no idea what the variables (beginning with “?”) mean. rdf:type (or “a”) must be used to specify what type of thing the variables represent.
- Here is a more complicated query. It selects only organisms that have a genus name of Corvus and which also have a material sample derived from them.

In the RDF I loaded, I directly asserted all of the chains of dsw:derivedFrom properties. I also directly asserted both properties in each set of inverse object properties. In real life, you would have software to infer those transitive and inverse properties and wouldn’t have to do it manually.
- In the previous example, you don’t have to put “?Organism” after “SELECT DISTINCT”. If you want to know the URIs of all the samples from Corvus sp., you can put “?Resource” instead.
