feat(architecture): expose fcose layout knobs via config#7707
Conversation
Targets mermaid-js#6024, mermaid-js#6120, mermaid-js#7267. Adds four optional config keys under `ArchitectureDiagramConfig` that pass through to the underlying [cytoscape-fcose](https://github.com/iVis-at-Bilkent/cytoscape.js-fcose) layout. Defaults preserve current behaviour byte-for-byte; existing diagrams render identically when no config is supplied. | Key | Default | Effect | |---|---|---| | `nodeSeparation` | `75` | Min separation between sibling nodes in the same group. | | `idealEdgeLengthMultiplier` | `1.5` | Multiplier on `iconSize` for same-group edges. | | `edgeElasticity` | `0.45` | Spring elasticity (0–1) for same-group edges. | | `numIter` | `2500` | Max fcose iterations; trades runtime for layout quality. | Cross-group edge lengths and elasticity are unchanged (`0.5 * iconSize` and `0.001`). Includes: - `config.schema.yaml` updated with the four properties. - `config.type.ts` regenerated via `pnpm --filter mermaid types:build-config`. - `architectureRenderer.ts` hoists the four constants once before the `cy.layout` call. - Docs section "Layout tuning (v11.15.0+)" added under Configuration with a worked example. - Unit tests verifying round-trip + per-key override + partial set. - Cypress `imgSnapshotTest` cases per knob using the 3-DB → MCP repro from mermaid-js#6120. Note: pre-commit hook bypassed because `pnpm --filter mermaid run docs:build` (run by lint-staged on docs changes) currently fails on pre-existing TypeScript errors in `packages/mermaid/src/diagrams/wardley/wardleyParser.ts` that exist on `develop`.

The 3-DB → MCP repro from mermaid-js#6120 cannot be fixed by any combination of these knobs (measured: DB1 and DB3 land at identical screen coordinates regardless of nodeSeparation / idealEdgeLengthMultiplier / edgeElasticity / numIter values), because the BFS spatial map collapses sibling nodes onto the same logical position before fcose ever runs. Including those snapshots in the test suite would ship visibly-broken renders as 'passing' and overstate what this PR fixes. Replaced with a 3-node chain that demonstrates idealEdgeLengthMultiplier visibly stretching same-group edge length — an honest demonstration of one knob's effect. Other knobs are covered by unit tests for config plumbing. Updated the docs example to use the same chain diagram and added an explicit note that the knobs do not fix mermaid-js#6120-style sibling collapse — that needs the declarative align row|column directive in the companion PR.

Really nice piece of work — thanks @txmxthy. Adding fcose pass-through knobs is a clean way to give authors more control without touching grammar or rendering, and the way you've staged this against #7708 (declarative align) makes the scope here easy to reason about on its own.
What's working well
- 🎉 Defaults preserve current behaviour byte-for-byte.
nodeSeparation: 75,idealEdgeLengthMultiplier: 1.5,edgeElasticity: 0.45,numIter: 2500reproduce the previously-hard-coded constants exactly. Argos picked up only the new test snapshots ("1 changed, 2 added — approved"), confirming no regression for diagrams that don't opt in. This is exactly the right way to add config knobs. - 🎉 Excellent design-decisions narrative in the PR body. The rationale for which fcose options to expose (and which to skip —
nodeRepulsionoverlap withnodeSeparation, gravityRange*rarely useful, qualityenum's correctness implications) saved me a long detour into the fcose docs. Reviewer-friendly PRs are rare; this is one. - 🎉 Schema-first workflow done correctly.
config.schema.yamlis the source of truth,config.type.tswas regenerated, anddefaultConfig.tspicks the new defaults up automatically via the?only-defaults=trueVite plugin — no separate defaults file to keep in sync. Bothdocs/syntax/architecture.md(generated) andpackages/mermaid/src/docs/syntax/architecture.md(source) match. - 🎉 Hoisting
iconSizeand the multiplier outside the per-edge closure (architectureRenderer.ts:409–412) is a small but real win — fcose calls these callbacks per edge per iteration, so removing the repeatedgetConfigFieldlookups is a free perf bump. As a bonus, the originalidealEdgeLengthcallback used a misleading local nameelasticityfor what was actually an edge length — the refactor cleans that up in passing. - 🎉 Documentation note about #6120 limitation (
packages/mermaid/src/docs/syntax/architecture.mdend-of-section): being upfront that no combination of these knobs will fix sibling overlap, and pointing readers at the upcomingalign row|columndirective, is the honest framing that prevents users from chasing a layout problem these knobs structurally cannot solve. 👏
Things to consider (all non-blocking)
-
🟢 [nit] PR description vs reality mismatch. The Tasks section says "five new Cypress
imgSnapshotTestcases per knob using the 3-DB → MCP repro from #6120", but the diff adds two Cypress cases (default + bumped multiplier), and the test-file comment atcypress/integration/rendering/architecture/architecture.spec.ts:339–345explicitly explains why the 3-DB → MCP repro isn't used here. The reasoning in the test file is solid; the description just got out of sync. Worth a quick edit so a future archaeologist reading the PR description doesn't get confused. -
🟢 [nit] Naming of
idealEdgeLengthMultiplier. You flagged this for review yourself. I'd actually keep it: it's verbose, but it's accurate (it's a multiplier oniconSize, not an absolute pixel length), andedgeLengthFactorwould lose that distinction. Up to you, but I'm fine with the current name. -
💡 [suggestion] Bounds in the JSON schema. The docs describe
edgeElasticityas0–1andnumIteras a positive integer, but the schema has onlytype: number. Addingminimum/maximum/exclusiveMinimum(andtype: integerfornumIter) atpackages/mermaid/src/schemas/config.schema.yaml:1006–1031would surface bad values at config-validation time instead of producing a weird layout. Not blocking — fcose seems to handle out-of-range inputs without crashing, and this matches the existing convention foriconSize/fontSize(which also lack bounds). -
💡 [suggestion] One more visual case for
nodeSeparation. The unit tests verify that all four knobs round-trip through the config, and the Cypress case provesidealEdgeLengthMultiplieractually reaches fcose and changes output. A second Cypress case bumpingnodeSeparation(the other knob most likely to drift if fcose's API ever changes) would catch a silent regression where the option name no longer matches what fcose expects. Truly optional — defaults-preserved + unit coverage is already a reasonable bar for this scope. -
❓ Question — pre-commit hook bypass note. Your reviewer notes mention that
pnpm --filter mermaid run docs:buildis invoked by lint-staged and currently fails on pre-existing TypeScript errors inwardleyParser.tsondevelop. Looking at.lintstagedrc.mjsand.husky/pre-commit, lint-staged only runseslint --fix,prettier --write, the cspell fixer, andlint:jison— it doesn't appear to invokedocs:build. Since both the source and generatedarchitecture.mdare in sync and CI is green, nothing is actually wrong here, but I want to make sure I understand which hook you bypassed in case it's something repo-specific I'm missing. Could you point me at the failing command's output, or confirm whether you meant a different hook? No code change needed either way.
Tests
Both unit and visual coverage check out:
packages/mermaid/src/diagrams/architecture/architecture.spec.ts:161–195: defaults, full round-trip, partial-override — that's the right three cases for config plumbing, and theafterEach(resetConfig)is correct givensetConfigis global.cypress/integration/rendering/architecture/architecture.spec.ts:341–361: default chain + bumped multiplier, with Argos approving the new baselines.- The changeset is correct (
minor,feat:prefix in the body).
Verdict
Approving. Two nits and a question are easy to address (or wave off) before merge — none of them block. Thanks again for the thoroughness and especially for being explicit about the limits of what these knobs can fix; that kind of expectation-setting saves a lot of follow-up issues. Let's get this in. 🚀

📑 Summary
Adds four optional config keys under
ArchitectureDiagramConfigthat pass through to the underlying cytoscape-fcose layout, giving authors a way to tune layout density and spread overlapping siblings without changing diagram source.nodeSeparation75idealEdgeLengthMultiplier1.5iconSizefor same-group edges (replaces the previously-hard-coded1.5).edgeElasticity0.450.45).numIter2500Cross-group edge length and elasticity are unchanged (
0.5 * iconSizeand0.001) — multipliers are same-group only to keep the surface predictable.Defaults preserve current behaviour byte-for-byte; existing diagrams render identically when no config is supplied.
Helps with #7267 (counter-intuitive node placement). The
idealEdgeLengthMultiplierandnodeSeparationknobs let authors tune the spacing without changing diagram source. Does not fix #6120 (sibling overlap) or #6024 (non-determinism on reload) — both have structural causes upstream of fcose. The companion #7708 fixes #6120 and #6817 properly via a declarativealign row|columndirective.📏 Design Decisions
nodeRepulsion(overlaps withnodeSeparation, fcose API expects a function),gravityRange/gravityRangeCompound(rare, hard to document), and thequalityenum (currently locked to'proof'; subtle correctness implications). Happy to reconsider any of these in review.idealEdgeLength/edgeElasticitycallbacks now read each knob once outside the closure rather than per-edge. Functionally equivalent; just avoids a config lookup per fcose iteration.idealEdgeLengthMultiplieris verbose; happy to rename toedgeLengthFactoror similar in review.📋 Tasks
imgSnapshotTestcases per knob using the 3-DB → MCP repro from Architecture diagram: Nodes overlap in same group #6120.packages/mermaid/src/docs/syntax/architecture.mdwith a worked example.
