Welcome to the Event-Horizon wiki!

Original Project Proposal This is a AR/VR multiplayer spaceship tactical board game. Where AR provides a tactical view for commanders while VR provides an immersive gameplay for individual fighter pilots. By combining the actions of both into one battle, this creates an immersive world and gameplay that can be enjoyed together in a social setting.

Recall one of the famous tropes of science fiction movies - high ranking officers - space ship captains and admirals standing around a holographic table, planning out moves in a battle from the bridge of their command ship, tension mounting as the battle rages around them. In the era of the first person shooter this level of scale and power has not yet been fully replicated. Two of the main limiting factors for this are presentation - a 2D monitor has a much different than a board game does for example, and scale - at the large scale a battles like these have, the individual units matter less, which detracts from the high stakes of this scenario.

The game I am proposing is both a Virtual Reality and an Augmented Reality game, depending on the player. The AR players can be considered "Captains", in which their gameplay takes place on their mobile phones, using a centralized AR target (as per software such as Vuforia) to anchor the gameplay to a centralized spot. These players call the shots and watch the battle unfold from a bird's eye view, giving both the benefits of a board game, with a much more tactical view, but with the animation and feedback of a videogame (This can even be extended to use miniatures, giving life to the game pieces resulting in the best of both - tactile gameplay with real time responsiveness). This answers helps to address the idea of presentation, and the Virtual Reality gameplay answers the question of scale. VR players (the number of VR players is not fixed, so any number may fight for a player in a game) are on a team with a "captain" they represent fighter pilots for instance. This addresses the idea of expendability and lack of risk. Being able to both communicate with the players in real life as well as seeing them depicted in the battle humanizes the people fighting for you in the game, raising the stakes of each loss in the battle. From the side of VR gaming, this addresses the very solitary nature of VR games without requiring every player to have a full setup to be in the world. This game takes the social aspect of a board game but augments it to create an entirely new social gaming experience by augmenting both the board game aspect for some players, while fully immersing the others to create a seamless, immersive world.
