CARE Principles for Indigenous Data Governance

The CARE Principles for Indigenous Data Governance stand for collective benefit, authority to control, responsibility, and ethics. As DAILP is a community-based and community-led archive, indigenous data sovereignty, as well as ethical data collection and publication aligning with the CARE principles, is a main priority.

DAILP’s archive for language persistence works with the Indigenous community to publish items to the collection only with approval from community members. Community members maintain control and authority over their knowledge and data within the DAILP collection. Any decisions regarding the material and data are respected and left to the community. We make sure that the relationship between the community members and their knowledge is maintained throughout the process of translation and documentation.

The function of the archive has the benefit and desires of the community taken into account with utmost importance. DAILP aims for the collections and translations to support the indigenous community and takes the responsibility seriously. DAILP’s workflows and systems are designed with regard for our community’s authority and rights at every step of the process.
