Word Level Analysis
This page outlines how DAILP represents word-level language data in the post-2024 stage of the project.
DAILP's manuscript annotation and analysis process enriches original manuscripts while providing English translations. We present word-level analyses using linguistic annotation that contains: Cherokee syllabary transcription from the original source Transliteration into a phonetic orthography (see Cherokee Description Settings) A word parts layer that highlights individual word parts (morphemes) in Cherokee phonetics; this layer also contains phonological information A gloss layer describing the function of morphemes in the above layer Word-level translation in English An audio recording of each word (See Audio Recordings and User Comments)
Audio-annotated data is included at the word level for every document. Users can privately upload their own recordings for each word to compare pronunciations and receive feedback. (Read More)
DAILP users are also able to leave comments on phonetics, tone, accent, and other pronunciation details to help improve the accuracy of our data and provide insight into Cherokee dialectal variation. (Read More)
The DAILP site allows users to select what level of analysis they want to view from three options: Syllabary: Paragraphs are displayed in the Cherokee syllabary only with English translations for each Syllabary and Simple Phonetics: Word-by-word descriptions using the syllabary, simple phonetics, and word-level translation layers in addition to paragraph-level translations Syllabary, Phonetics, and Word Parts: Word-by-word descriptions using the syllabary, simple phonetics, word parts, and gloss layers in addition to paragraph-level translations
DAILP users can choose to view a phonetic orthography that suits their needs: Learner: Transliterates the syllabary using Worcester’s qu and ts spellings; omits tone, accent and vowel length information. Linguist (Cherokee Reference Grammar): Linguistic analysis using terms from Cherokee Reference Grammar (CRG); displays tone and vowel length information using accents. Linguist (Tone and Accent in Oklahoma Cherokee): Linguistic analysis using terms from Tone and Accent in Oklahoma Cherokee (TAOC); displays extensive tone and vowel length information using accents.
