## Outline of the training school
X-ray imaging is a new tool in structural biology. Right now two synchrotron beamlines in Europe (!U41-TXM at HZB-BESSY II in Berlin and Mistral at ALBA in Barcelona) are devoted to soft X-ray cryo-tomography of cells, allowing structural biologists to use soft X-ray microscopy. BESSY II beamline started users operation in 2009 and Mistral just opened in 2012, therefore the community making use of these facilities is still small, although continuously growing due to the increasing interest in this technique. New users are not always familiar with tomography and the available image processing software packages for dealing with their data. This training school will strengthen the image capacities of new researchers so that relevant scientific information can be extracted from their experimental data.
The aim of this training schools is bringing together experts and users at a starting level for a practical session on how to deal with the data collected at the synchrotrons, covering from pre-processing to post-processing: normalization, alignment, reconstruction, filtering and segmentation. An introduction to tomography and to image formation with soft X-ray lenses (i.e. Fresnel Zone Plates) will be included to give an overview of the specific problems and limitations that have to be faced with this technique.
The course fee is 350E, which includes accommodation and all meals during the course.
Additionally, there are 6 travel grants for attendees from COST countries (http://www.cost.eu/domains_actions/mpns/Actions/MP1207?parties), for up to 550E, to cover airplane tickets (tourist class only) and accomodation. Their Registration fee will be covered byBiostruct-X project.
