Sequencer Tab

The Sequencer tab is where you create and edit your light show sequences. Each row represents a model (or model group), and each column represents a time interval. Effects are placed in cells to define what each model does at each point in time.

Interface Overview

xLights sequencer

The Sequencer tab is divided into several panels:

Panel Location Purpose
Model List Left Lists all models and groups in your layout
Timeline / Grid Centre The main editing area — drag effects onto cells
Effect Settings Top right Configure the selected effect
Color Panel Right Set effect colors and gradients
Layer Blending Right Control how multiple effect layers blend
Timing Marks Top of grid Audio waveform and beat/phrase markers

Opening a Sequence

  1. Go to File > Open Sequence (Ctrl+O) and select a .xsq file, or
  2. Go to File > New Sequence (Ctrl+N) to start from scratch.

A sequence must have an associated audio file or a defined duration.

Adding Effects

  1. Click and drag on the grid to select a time range on a model row.
  2. Double-click an effect in the Effects panel (top), or drag it onto the grid.
  3. Adjust settings in the Effect Settings panel on the right.
  4. Press Space to play/pause preview.

Timing Marks

Timing marks divide the timeline into musical sections (bars, beats, phrases). They are used to snap effects to the music.

  • Auto-generate: Audio > Timing Marks > Generate Timing Marks
  • Import: Audio > Import Timing Marks (from Audacity labels, etc.)

Layers

Each model row can have multiple effect layers stacked on top of each other. Use the Layer Blending panel to control how layers interact (Normal, Add, Subtract, etc.).

Right-click a model row to Add Layer or Delete Layer.

Rendering

When you are ready to preview or export your sequence:

  • Render All: Tools > Render All (or F5) — renders every model
  • Render Selected: Right-click > Render Row — renders just the selected row
  • Play: Press Space or click the Play button in the toolbar

Saving

  • Save: Ctrl+S — saves the .xsq file
  • Save As: File > Save Sequence As — save under a new name

Changes are not auto-saved. Save frequently.
